The Iowa Training Consortium has awarded eight mini-grants for Building Supportive Communities in 2000.

Mini-grant criteria

PURPOSE

To encourage training and education that will help to build supportive communities for Iowans with disabilities.

TYPES OF TRAINING TO BE FUNDED

The mini-grants are intended to increase opportunities for Iowans with disabilities to live and participate fully in their communities. Mini-grant projects must address one or more of the following areas:

  1. skills to enable direct-service staff to assist people toward full inclusion
  2. self-determination/self-advocacy skills for people who have disabilities
  3. disability awareness for the general public.

AUDIENCES

Mini-grant projects may be geared toward a wide variety of community audiences, including people with disabilities, family members, elementary and college students, volunteers, civic and governmental leaders, and professional providers. Projects are encouraged to reach audiences that include many different groups, and to incorporate "cross-training" (people training each other).

FUNDS AVAILABLE

Approximately $9,500. Mini-grants between $1000-$1500 are anticipated. Higher or lower amounts will be considered, depending on the audience or the cost of training.

DEADLINES

Mini-grant applications must be post-marked by November 5. Notification will be by November 30. Projects must be completed by April 1, 2000.
