Youth Leadership Forum Now Accepting Applications

"I think the message of self-advocacy is very, very important. At YLF, my mentor gave me many ideas for improving my life. I learned that I can do stuff on my own and I can make something of myself, as well as a positive difference in the world. When a group of young people with disabilities gets together, after a while those conditions disappear and we are all just a bunch of kids sharing a fun learning experience."

Mack Fuller, Decorah, Iowa, 2003 Youth Leadership Forum Participant

The Division of Persons with Disabilities, in partnership with the Department of Education/Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services and the Department for the Blind, announced in a recent press release that it is currently accepting applications for the Iowa High School Youth Leadership Forum for Students with Disabilities.

This successful forum, which takes place in Ames on the ISU campus from July 11th through July 16th, is a unique summer program designed to teach leadership and self-advocacy skills to high school students with disabilities. Each year, students attending the forum say that it has a tremendously positive impact upon their lives. Says Carrie Mallinger from Duncombe, "It gave me the courage to advocate for myself."

Connie Cooper, mother of Seth Cooper, said, " I think YLF is a wonderful program not only for the students but also for the parents. He could be himself and felt like he was able to have a little independence for the first time. It helped me to overcome some of my fears that he couldn't survive without me."

The forum is designed to reinforce and teach skills towards transition from high school to work and/or college. Iowa High School juniors and seniors with any type of disability who are interested in preparing for post secondary education and employment are urged to apply. Applications are online at www.state.ia.us/dhr/pd or contact the Division of Persons with Disabilities at 888/219-0471.

For more information ask your high school counselor, AEA representative, or contact the Division of Persons with Disabilities at 888-219-0471 or dhr.disabilities@dhr.state.ia.us.
