Two more persons with disabilities are enjoying community life, thanks to Conner Training Consortium grant funds. We commend the good work and commitment of the Henry County Central Point of Coordination office, Systems Unlimited, AmeriServe International, and Woodward Resource Center. We are presently in the process of developing additional contracts with the Glenwood Resource Center and Howard Center. It’s exciting to see so much interest in helping people transition to community life!

Calling all activists! Are you tired of the status quo? Do you have ideas for making Iowa a better place to live for persons with disabilities and families? Then Third Wave is right for you! Third Wave is a loosely-knit group of individuals with disabilities and family members whose goal it is to make change happen in Iowa. Founders include individuals with disabilities, family members, a representative of a Center for Independent Living, and the co-director of SALYD, Iowa’s youth advocacy organization. The organization receives funding and support from the Iowa Governor’s DD Council, ID Action, and Sumo Group, Inc. “Leaders in this organization have the experience necessary to get things done,” said organizer Keith Ruff of the Conner Center for Independent Living in Iowa City. “We’ve learned from our mistakes, and have experienced 10 years of political growth.” After holding an organizational meeting in October, Third Wave hit the road, hosting four focus groups around Iowa in November. Attendees were very vocal in identifying key issues confronting Iowa’s disability community. The need for more employment opportunities, concerns about Iowa’s inflexible and confusing service delivery system, and the need for a strong consumer voice topped the list. Now the fun begins. In the near future, Third Wave leaders will be meeting to sort out the issues from the focus groups and figure out how best to advocate. That’s where you come in! “I’m excited about being a part of an organization which can really make a difference,” says Nichole Goble of SALYD. Share Nichole’s excitement by becoming a part of this new and growing movement. To join or for more information, contact Nancy Witt at 319-345-2609, nwitt@prairieinet.net or Josh Bronsink at 515-282-5291, jbronsink@sumogroup.com.
