Since December 2002, over 1,200 Iowa elementary School students from College Springs to Nora Springs have spent an hour learning about blindness. They have learned to dial a telephone and distinguish money by touch, and have asked questions on topics ranging from the Braille alphabet to recreation.
"The training session on blindness was a wonderful way of becoming familiar with some of the tools and methods blind persons use every day," said South Page Elementary third grade teacher, Kathleen Davison. "I hope this enlightens these students and prepares them for meeting and working with visually impaired people in their lives."
This excellent outreach opportunity is made possible through K12 Connections, a program of Iowa Public Television. The program utilizes the Iowa Communications Network (ICN) to link volunteer presenters with students across Iowa. According to K12 Coordinator, Trista Peitzman, K12 Connections reached approximately 69,000 students during the 2002-03 school year.
"K12 Connections offers unique, highly interactive opportunities which would otherwise be unavailable to students," says Peitzman. "We supplement the training by providing useful learning resources to teachers."
Presently, blindness is the only disability-related topic offered through K12 Connections. Peitzman hopes that will change.
"We would like to offer more sessions on disability," she stated. "It's great when people can approach us with prepared presentations, but we are willing to help organize a session if necessary."
Peitzman was quick to point out that K12 Connections has an inclusive philosophy. She encourages teachers of students with disabilities to sign up for sessions. Nearly all staff have an education background, and will work to meet accommodation needs.
