The Training for Supportive Communities mini-grant program provided the opportunity for 240 self-advocates, parents, educators, community leaders, students, and human service providers in Story County to hear a dynamic young woman share her inspirational and personal story about inclusion. In February, The Arc of Story County hosted three community events to initiate a dialog on inclusion in the classroom, inclusion and self- advocacy, and inclusion in our communities.Color photograph of Karen Gaffney and audience members, following speech (14982 bytes)

Karen Gaffney is currently a student at a community college in Portland, Oregon, and is studying to be an educational assistant for early intervention and special education classrooms. Karen, who has Down Syndrome, has been fully included in her education and community. Through her foundation, she has made dozens of speeches across the nation about her life. Karen encourages others to insist on inclusion, and serves as a role model for families and individuals with disabilities.

Many educators who attended were inspired by the potential for learning and personal growth that an inclusive classroom can offer.
