Karen Myers of Camanche received a mini-grant from the Iowa Training Consortium to educate police officers, attorneys, social workers, and families on brain injury. Myers, who was brain-injured in 1981, used her grant to organize and give eight presentations on the signs and symptoms of brain injury, accommodations needed in a courtroom setting, and resources for courtroom preparation and documentation. Audiences included victims of domestic abuse, judges, jail personnel, lawyers, DHS staff, and mental health center employees. Since making her presentations in the Clinton-Camanche area, Myers has received numerous invitations to speak to police, law, and medical groups in Illinois as well as Iowa.
Myers project was one of eight funded in 2000 by the Department of Human Services as a result of the 1994 Conner Decree, a lawsuit that challenged the state of Iowa to develop more services and supports that would allow people with disabilities to live in their own communities.

We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make.
