Partners in Policymaking Now Accepting Applications

Partners in Policymaking is a training program of the Governor's Developmental Disabilities Council. It is designed for individuals with developmental disabilities and family members, to provide up-to-date, state-of-the-art information about disability issues from local and nationally-recognized presenters.

The goal of Partners is to teach people how to create change -- at the local, state, and federal levels of government - to improve the lives of persons with disabilities. The program encourages productive partnerships between the people needing and using services and the people who make public policy.

Partners participate in nine one-day sessions, each Saturday per month beginning in September. The sessions, held in the Des Moines area, are free of charge. Participants must make a commitment to attend all sessions.

Training topics include history of institutionalization, history of the disability movement, self-advocacy, current public policy, inclusive education, supported employment, and creating a vision for the future.

Partners in Policymaking is now seeking applications from motivated individuals who have a disability or are parents of a child with a disability. Applications are due by June 30. For more information, call 800-452-1936 or 515-281-9082 or see information online at http://www.state.ia.us/ddcouncil/new/new.html#partners
