"It was money very well spent"

The person who said that work and fun don’t go hand in hand has not visited a certain lively residence in Glenwood. I’m speaking of the home shared by four of the 10 recipients of this year’s Community Living Transition grant.

As I approached the house, Danny greeted me with an enthusiastic “Come on in!” Upon discovering that he had company, Richard couldn’t wait to show off his room. It was filled with personal effects—tasteful furniture, pictures on the wall, a Hawkeye blanket. Downstairs, Brian, who had staked out a workroom, proudly explained that he had fixed a lawnmower which hadn’t worked in over two years. With an infectious smile, Jason told us about upcoming plans for the prom.

“What’s so great about living here?” I asked. “I have my own space,” explained Richard. “We’re starting a lawn mowing business,” Brian chimed in. Annette, another grant recipient, stopped pouring over the grocery ads long enough to say, “Choosing our food!” All wholeheartedly agreed. “They have so much more independence, and they love doing things in the community,” said Dianne, a fun-loving staff member who works at the house. Glenwood Resource Center Social Work Administrator, Diana Hoogestraat, summed up the benefits of this year’s Community Living Transition Grant this way: “It was money very well spent for some very special people.”

"Can You See Me for What I Am"

Considerate of others is what I believe in.
Accountable for my actions toward others
is the proper way to be.
No one has the right to be rude to others.
Years of experience follow me wherever I might go.
One is bound to make a mistake occasionally.
Understanding of the fact that no one is ever perfect.
Sometimes out of consideration,
the person will look the other way.
Expecting to be treated royally
is not a very nice way to act.
Emotions can sometimes get in the way.
Magical moments can happen for anyone.
Expectations of life sometimes get changed
along the way.
Friends are an important part in one’s life.
Occupations tend to lead many on a different path
than a person has originally planned.
Reaching your potential while reaching
for your dreams or stars.
When you stare at someone, it really hurts their feelings.
Helping others is a better thing in life to do.
Accepting me as a person instead of looking at my
disability would be very helpful to me.
Teaching others how to accept me is what I feel
destined to do with my life.
Intellectually people are sometimes stronger
than physically.
Adopting a positive attitude can be beneficial for you.
Maybe then you will be able to see that
I’m just like you.
