"Think Competence" Grants Awarded

Twelve community inclusion projects have been awarded grants by the Governor's Developmental Disabilities and the Center for Disabilities and Development. The projects will be administered by 'community strategy teams' in eleven counties in Iowa.

All of the teams participated in a "Think Competence" workshop last spring where they developed strategies for creating positive changes in their communities by defining needs, enlisting the support of key leaders, and identifying local resources. The teams, awarded up to $5,000, will complete their projects in 2002. Other teams who participated in the workshop may also receive technical assistance from the Center for Disabilities and Development in the next fiscal year.

Teams receiving grants this year are from Ames, Anamosa, Council Bluffs, Decorah, Estherville, Latimer, New Hampton, Sheldon, Spencer, Waterloo (2), and Waukon.

Community Living Transition Grant

Photograph of Patty Beiner and Faith Kuennen, Opportunity Homes, Inc.The Iowa Training Consortium has completed its second year of Community Living Transition grants. Grant money was earmarked by the Iowa Department of Human Services to support specific individuals to live in their communities, rather than in institutional settings. The funding is a result of the 1994 Conner Decree that settled a lawsuit challenging the state of Iowa to develop more services and supports that would allow people with disabilities to live in their own communities.

In FY 2002, a grant was awarded to Mercy Medical Center Case Management in Chickasaw County. The grantee worked with Glenwood Resource Center, local providers, the Center for Disabilities and Development, and community support systems to help an individual move to and live in a group home in Cresco. Grant money was used for staff training, training materials, furniture and personal items, one-on-one staffing, vocational services, and transportation.

For more information about "Think Competence" or community living transition grants, call 319-353-6448.
