Arc of Iowa Celebrates 50 Years; Looks to Future

"I observed many remarkable people who instinctively knew that the convention would run more smoothly and be more welcoming to all with just a little assistance. It is effort like this that will be the base on which the Arc of Iowa revitalizes and becomes the strong advocate that Senator Grassley remembers!"

This quote from Delaine Petersen, Executive Director of the Arc of East Central Iowa and principal organizer of this year's Arc state convention, sums up the spirit of the event held on May 2-3 in Cedar Rapids.

To honor the Arc's rich past, conference breakout rooms were named after former state presidents. Present and future came to life through a technology expo and informal opportunities to visit with new DHS director Kevin Concannon.

"The active participation of People First, Iowa's new grassroots disability advocacy organization, signified Arc's recognition of the growing need for families and individuals with disabilities to work together," said Janet Arnold, People First of Iowa president.

Past, present and future were connected at the awards luncheon. Self-advocates, parents, and teachers were among the 20 individuals and businesses recognized. The keynote speaker, Senator Charles Grassley, paid tribute to long-time Arc leaders while urging participants to advocate for current disability issues.

Reflecting on the success of the 50th anniversary convention, Arc State President Alice Phillips said: "If you would like to be a part of an organization which values tradition while proactively planning for the future, join the Arc of Iowa." For more information, call 800-362-2927.
