“Once I got up on skis, I wasn’t nervous at all,” said Kelly Van Veldhuizen, an attorney who lives in Davenport. “It was so liberating—one of the best experiences I’ve had since my injury.” Van Veldhuizen joined 22 other disabled skiers at the “Access to Waves” ski clinic held August 20 and 21 in Rock Island, IL. Nearly 100 family members, friends, and volunteers participated in the event sponsored by Genesis Health System, Backwater Gamblers Ski Club, and the Iowa Governor’s DD Council in cooperation with the UI Center for Disabilities and Development.
“I first experienced adaptive water skiing at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo,” organizer Glen Sancken, a recreational therapist at Genesis, explained. “I was able to participate as a disabled person, and I wanted to share the experience with others in the Quad Cities.”
Genesis and the Backwater Gamblers teamed up to organize the first ski clinic in 2004. Vito Lucido, a disabled ski instructor from St. Louis, trained the skiers. The clinic’s success convinced Sancken to hold a similar event in 2005. “As soon as we heard about this from Glen, we knew it was something we wanted to do,” said Backwater Gamblers Ski Club president Dennis Heggen.
The Backwater Gamblers “walked the talk.” On Saturday, several club members received training from Vito Lucido to become instructors at Sunday’s clinic. Dozens of other members and their spouses showed up to serve food and cheer on the skiers. The line between disabled and non-disabled vanished, replaced with the common pursuit of fun and fellowship. “Our ultimate goal is that persons will be able to ski whenever they choose, regardless of whether they have a disability,” said Genesis Therapeutic Recreation Manager Doug Boleyn. Kelly Van Veldhuizen welcomes that opportunity. “I want to buy my own equipment,” she says. No doubt, she will.
