Self-Advocacy Changes a Life

I've been passionate about advocacy for a long time. It did my heart good, therefore, to meet Tina (name changed) and to see what a difference advocacy has made in her life. Tina knew that she would have to move after graduating from Glenwood High School in May. "I wanted to live close to my friend in Lenox," she said. That meant finding a place to live in a new town. Enter Taylor Ridge Estates.

"The great thing is that Tina was very vocal about wanting to come here," said Taylor Ridge social worker Sandy Marshall. "It's been a great fit for her." Tina used Training Consortium funds to outfit her room and to purchase a bike and cell phone. "I just loved picking out my own stuff," said Tina. "I think my favorite thing is the bike because it gives me so much freedom.

"It's nice to be able to go to the store and other places without having to worry about getting in trouble," said a content Tina, who now occupies her time with such things as talking with new friends and designing the first-place float for the local parade. "I really like it here. I get to see Kyle once a week, and I'm going to start dance class pretty soon. I'm saving up money for a swimming and shopping trip next month."

And all this because Tina dared to be a self-advocate. It paid off!
