Young Iowans with Disabilities

Welcome to Possibilities. For the next few issues, we will let you in on some of the exciting opportunities for young Iowans with disabilities. First stop: Ames.

Congratulations to Story County Community Services, this year's recipient of the Conner Training Consortium's Community Living Transition Grant. Within the next few months, a 17-year-old young woman presently residing at the Woodward Resource Center will return to her home community of Ames. Story County Central Point of Coordination (CPC) Administrator Deb Schildroth and her staff have assembled an impressive team which includes the consumer, her family, and agencies which will provide educational, vocational and housing services. Prior to leaving Woodward, the consumer and her family will visit several housing options and select the one which best meets her needs. Schildroth notes, "The consumer and her family are very happy that she will be coming home." We wish to acknowledge Story County Community Services for their ingenuity, and thank CPC Deb Schildroth for the following kind words:

"Possibilities is the way in which I learned about the Community Transition grant several years ago. What has been even more helpful is the 'showcasing' of the personal stories and ways in which the funds are used to help move individuals into community settings. It was also helpful to know which counties/agencies used the grant funds as I could consult with them as a learning opportunity when this office applied for the grant this year. Keep up the good work!"
